Chainbreaker Collective: Eviction Moratorium

Know Your Rights

In November 2020, Chainbreaker partnered with the City of Santa Fe and Somos Un Pueblo Unido to help the City distribute $500,000 for Eviction Prevention and $1.5 Million in COVID-19 Relief Funds to Santa Feans. Applications were processed as quickly as possible to meet the high need. All funds have been distributed, however, Chainbreaker will continue to organize to expand this model of putting public funds into the hands of the people hit hardest by the public health emergency through direct cash assistance. We also know that as helpful as direct cash assistance is, many people will continue to face hardships, like struggling to pay rent during and after the pandemic.

Every tenant has rights

Chainbreaker is a membership-based economic and environmental justice organization working to expand access to affordable transportation and housing and to build a more sustainable Santa Fe community. Chainbreaker organizes renters to exercise their rights under the law. Since the COVID crisis, Chainbreaker has been providing information about the temporary eviction protections established by the three government moratoriums. These pauses on evictions protect renters for non-payment of rent. Although it is an unfortunate situation to be in, owing rent means you may be protected by the moratorium and cannot be evicted.
Whether you have received a written eviction notice, a verbal demand to pay back due rent, or are just worried about being forced from your home—YOU HAVE RIGHTS and YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
